Why Arabic Telugu translation is tricky

Telugu speakers meet Arabic mainly in the Gulf, where many families from Hyderabad, Guntur and Vijayawada work, and at home through Deccani Urdu, which left Telugu with words such as జిల్లా (jillaa, district), తారీఖు (taareekhu, date), జవాబు (javaabu, answer), వకీలు (vakeelu, lawyer), కుర్చీ (kurchee, chair), కలం (kalam, pen) and ఖర్చు (kharchu, expense), all Arabic in origin. The loanwords are a handful; the rest is distance.

  • Scripts with opposite habits. Telugu writes every vowel as part of the letter; Arabic writes only long vowels and leaves the short ones to the reader. The harakat line fills them in.
  • Agglutination versus roots. Telugu stacks endings on one word (ఇంటికి, "to the house"); Arabic uses a preposition and a root-based noun (إِلَى البَيْتِ, ilaa l-bayt). Sentences are rebuilt, not mapped.
  • Verb last, verb first. Telugu ends with the verb (నేను బజారుకు వెళ్తాను); Standard Arabic usually starts with it (أَذْهَبُ إِلَى السُّوقِ, adhhabu ilaa s-sooq).
  • Gender on "you". Telugu does not change the verb for the person addressed; Arabic does, and also marks whether the speaker is a man or a woman. The tool notes when it assumed.

Tips for better results

Pick Gulf or Saudi for an employer, colleague or landlord in the Gulf, Standard Arabic for an official letter or a form. Type in Telugu script rather than Roman Telugu; the model reads both, but standard spelling leaves less to guess. Say whether you are speaking to a man or a woman. Keep each request to a sentence or two. Telugu names are written by sound, and Arabic has no p or v, so Pavan becomes بَافَان; check names on the name in Arabic page. The Hindi to Arabic and Urdu to Arabic pages cover the same ground for those languages, English to Saudi Arabic lists work phrases with harakat, and Arabic transliteration explains the Latin letters under every result.
