Why Hindi to Arabic is tricky

Hindi speakers already use a lot of Arabic without knowing it: किताब (kitaab), वक़्त (waqt), दुनिया (duniya), ख़बर (khabar), सवाल (sawaal), जवाब (jawaab), क़लम (qalam), कुर्सी (kursi) and तारीख़ (taareekh) all came from Arabic through Persian and Urdu. The words help; the grammar does not.

  • Different scripts, different logic. Devanagari writes every vowel; Arabic writes only the long ones and leaves the rest to the reader. The harakat line puts them back in.
  • Sounds Hindi has to approximate. Arabic ع ح ق خ show up in Hindi as the nukta letters क़ ख़ ग़ ज़ फ़ or vanish; vakt for waqt is normal, but the Arabic needs the q.
  • Verb last, verb first. Hindi ends the sentence with the verb (मैं बाज़ार जाता हूँ); Standard Arabic usually starts with it (أَذْهَبُ إِلَى السُّوقِ, adhhabu ilaa s-sooq).
  • Gender in both, but not the same way. Hindi marks the speaker's gender on the verb (जाता / जाती); Arabic marks it on the verb and on "you", so the tool needs to know who you are talking to and says so in a note when it assumes.

Tips for better results

Pick Gulf or Saudi for an employer, landlord or colleague in the UAE, Qatar or Saudi Arabia, where most Hindi speakers meet Arabic; keep Standard Arabic for a form or a letter. Type in Devanagari rather than Roman Hindi; the model reads Hinglish, but the standard spelling leaves less to guess. Say whether you are speaking to a man or a woman. Keep each request short. Indian names are written by sound (Priya becomes بْرِيَا, with a b, because Arabic has no p); the name in Arabic page shows how to check that. The reverse direction is Arabic to Hindi; for Gulf phrases with harakat see English to Saudi Arabic, and Urdu to Arabic if you prefer typing in Urdu script.

Frequently asked questions

Are Hindi and Arabic similar?

No. Hindi is Indo-Aryan and Arabic is Semitic, with different scripts, sounds and word order. What they share is vocabulary that entered Hindi through Persian and Urdu: किताब, वक़्त, दुनिया, सवाल, जवाब, क़लम, कुर्सी, मोहब्बत and many more.

Which Hindi words come from Arabic?

Everyday ones: किताब (book), वक़्त (time), दुनिया (world), ख़बर (news), सवाल (question), जवाब (answer), क़लम (pen), कुर्सी (chair), तारीख़ (date), मोहब्बत (love), इंतज़ार (waiting), क़ानून (law). The Arabic originals keep the sounds Hindi softened, such as the q and the ayn.

Both are machine translation, but Google returns Standard Arabic without vowel marks and without a dialect choice. This page adds the dialect menu, harakat and a transliteration under every result.
