Why Malayalam to Arabic is tricky
Kerala has been in touch with Arabic for centuries through trade, the Mappila Muslim community and, today, the families working in the Gulf. There is even Arabi-Malayalam, Malayalam written in Arabic letters with extra signs, used for Mappila songs and madrasa texts. None of that makes the two languages alike.
- Different scripts, different habits. Malayalam writes every vowel with its own sign; Arabic writes only the long ones and expects the reader to know the rest. The harakat line gives you the rest.
- Agglutination versus roots. Malayalam stacks suffixes onto one word (വീട്ടിലേക്ക്, "to the house"); Arabic builds words from three-letter roots and spreads the meaning over several words (إِلَى البَيْتِ, ilaa l-bayt). Every sentence is rebuilt.
- Gender. Malayalam verbs do not change for gender; Arabic verbs and the word for "you" do, so the model needs to know whether you address a man or a woman and leaves a note when it assumes.
- Loanwords that look Arabic. Malayalam വക്കീൽ (vakkeel, lawyer), ജില്ല (jilla, district), കിതാബ് (kitab) and ദുനിയാവ് (duniyavu) came from Arabic, mostly through Persian and Urdu, and the Arabic originals وَكِيل, ضِلْع, كِتَاب, دُنْيَا do not always mean the same thing today.

Tips for better results
Pick Gulf or Saudi when the reader is a sponsor, colleague or landlord in the Gulf; keep Standard Arabic for documents and for anything religious. Type in Malayalam script rather than Manglish; the model reads Roman Malayalam, but standard spelling leaves less to guess. Say who you are addressing. Keep each request to a sentence or two. Names are written by sound, and Arabic has no p, so Deepak becomes دِيبَاك; the name in Arabic page lets you check. The reverse direction is Arabic to Malayalam; the Saudi Arabic and English to Arabic pages explain the dialect menu, and Arabic transliteration covers the Latin letters under every result.
Frequently asked questions
Is Malayalam harder than Arabic?
They are hard in different ways. Malayalam has a large script with conjunct letters and long agglutinated words; Arabic has 28 letters but hides its short vowels and builds words from roots. For a Malayalam speaker the new part of Arabic is the sounds, ع ح ق; for an Arabic speaker the retroflex consonants and the word length of Malayalam are the hurdle.
What is Arabi-Malayalam?
Malayalam written in the Arabic script with added letters for sounds Arabic lacks. It was the written language of Kerala's Mappila Muslims for centuries and survives in songs and religious texts. This tool writes Arabic, not Arabi-Malayalam.
Which Malayalam words come from Arabic?
Among others: വക്കീൽ (lawyer), ജില്ല (district), കിതാബ് (book), ദുനിയാവ് (world), ഹലാൽ (halal), സലാം (greeting). In Mappila speech many more Arabic words are in daily use.
Does Google Translate do Malayalam to Arabic?
