Why Italian to Arabic is tricky

Italy's Arabic speakers mostly come from Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia. An Italian sentence meant for a coworker or a partner therefore usually needs Darija or Egyptian, not the Standard Arabic of textbooks. The dialect menu is there for that. Beyond the dialect, four things trip up a word-for-word approach:

  • Gender goes further. Italian marks it on nouns and adjectives; Arabic also marks it on verbs and on "you": sei stanco and sei stanca become أَنْتَ مُتْعَب (anta mut3ab) and أَنْتِ مُتْعَبَة (anti mut3aba).
  • The formal Lei has no Arabic twin. Arabic addresses everyone as anta or anti and shows respect with titles such as أُسْتَاذ (ustaadh) or حَضْرَتَك (7adritak) in Egyptian.
  • Script and vowels. Arabic reads right to left and leaves short vowels out; the harakat line restores them so you can pronounce the result.
  • Old loanwords, new words. Italian zucchero, dogana, magazzino, carciofo, zafferano and sciroppo came from Arabic through Sicily and trade, but modern Arabic may use a different word: dogana is جُمْرُك (jumruk) today, not the medieval diwaan.

Tips for better results

Choose Moroccan for Morocco and, as the nearest option, Tunisia; Egyptian for Egypt; Standard Arabic for a form, a letter or a reader you do not know. State who you are addressing when the Italian hides it ("a una donna" in brackets works). Keep requests to a sentence or two and end each with a period. Italian names are written by sound, so Giulia becomes جُولْيَا; the name in Arabic page lets you check the spelling. The reverse direction is Arabic to Italian. English to Egyptian Arabic and English to Moroccan Arabic show the dialect phrases with harakat, and Arabic transliteration explains the Latin letters under the result.

Frequently asked questions

Are Italian and Arabic similar?

No. Italian is a Romance language and Arabic is Semitic; they share a few hundred loanwords (zucchero, dogana, magazzino, zero, cifra, algebra) and little else. Sicilian keeps more Arabic words than standard Italian.

How do you say Arab in Italian?

Arabo for a man or the language, araba for a woman: parlo arabo is "I speak Arabic". In Arabic the word is عَرَبِيّ (3arabiyy).

Does Google Translate do Italian to Arabic?

Yes, into Standard Arabic only, with no vowel marks and no Darija or Egyptian option. This page adds the dialect choice, harakat and transliteration; both are machine translation.

Is there an Italian-Arabic dictionary on this page?

No entries to browse, but a single Italian word typed into the box returns its Arabic with vowels, its pronunciation and the Standard Arabic form.

Is the Italian to Arabic translator free?

Yes, with a daily free limit shared by the site. No account, and the text you type is not stored.
