Why German to Arabic is tricky

Since 2015 Germany has had a large Syrian community, with Iraqis and Egyptians alongside, so a German sentence for a neighbor, a patient or a new colleague usually wants Levantine or Iraqi Arabic rather than the Standard Arabic of a dictionary. The dialect menu handles that; four other things need care.

  • Du and Sie. Arabic has no formal "you"; أَنْتَ (anta) addresses a man of any rank and أَنْتِ (anti) a woman. Politeness goes into set phrases such as لَوْ سَمَحْت (law sama7t).
  • Three genders become two. German der, die, das map onto Arabic masculine and feminine, and Arabic also marks gender on verbs and adjectives: bist du müde? becomes هَلْ أَنْتَ مُتْعَب to a man and هَلْ أَنْتِ مُتْعَبَة to a woman.
  • Word order. German sends the verb to the end of a subordinate clause (weil ich müde bin); Standard Arabic keeps the verb early (لِأَنِّي مُتْعَب, li'annee mut3ab, with no verb at all).
  • Compounds. Krankenversicherungskarte is one German word and three Arabic ones (بِطَاقَةُ التَّأْمِينِ الصِّحِّيِّ, bitaaqatu t-ta'meeni s-si77iyy). The few shared words, Zucker, Kaffee, Matratze, Alkohol, Ziffer, came through Italian or Spanish and rarely match the modern Arabic term.

Tips for better results

Pick Levantine for Syrians, Lebanese, Jordanians and Palestinians, Iraqi for Iraqis, Egyptian for Egyptians, Standard Arabic for an Amt letter, a notice or a reader you do not know. Say who you are addressing when the German does not show it ("an eine Frau" in brackets is enough). Split long German sentences; one clause per request translates more reliably than a nested one. German names are written by sound, and Arabic has no p or v, so Paul becomes بُول; check names on the name in Arabic page. The English to Levantine Arabic page lists Syrian phrases with harakat, English to Iraqi Arabic does the same for Iraqi, and Arabic transliteration explains the Latin letters under every result.
